Similar forest composition extends over a large area of this ridge top and slopes with more hemlock and/or tulip poplar coming in more moist aspects or positions. To east is private with abandoned pasture in early succession.;Gentle upper slope of Shavers Mountain with second growth mixed hardwoods dominated by red oak and black cherry. There is a moderate accumulation of down trunks from density-dependant thinning and branches from snow damage. Noise from highway still audible. Herb layer is species poor and sparse and exposed rock are moss covered. Recent snow storm brought down many branches and tree tops, Especially Magnolias.
Representativeness
Typical matrix forest at middle-high elevation, acidic substrate. Taken to compare plots at Camp Dawson which are heavily logged . Plot sampled in late fall but leaf on - probably missed some early season herbs, snow patchy on ground.
